The American in Constantinople, 1800-1901

2013
Paperback
224 p.

The selections discussed and reprinted here are drawn from travel books and commentaries on the Ottoman Empire written by Americans and published between 1817 and 1901. Together they constitute a conversation about Constantinople as seen by Americans in the nineteenth century. At times the selections may tell us less about the city than about the ways it was seen by Americans who arrived with very set interests and biases; in short, the book concerns nineteenth-century Americans as much as it concerns the city itself.
